Snow storms hit northern Japan leaves 6 dead

A minimum of 6 people died in a spate of snow-related mishaps as snow storms swept across the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido over the weekend, law enforcement and news reports stated Sunday.

A 40-year-old woman and her 3 teenaged kids were found dead late Saturday in a vehicle hidden under snow in the city of Nakashibetsu, eastern Hokkaido, a local police spokesperson stated. They’re thought to have died of co poisoning as the vehicle’s exhaust pipe and was blocked by snow and the windows were up, Kyodo News said, adding that snowfalls of over 2 metres (6.6 feet) were recorded in the region.

A 23-year-old girl who went missing in the same town was discovered dead on Sunday in snow some 300 metres away from her vehicle, Jiji Press news agency said.
