The United States on Thursday called on all sides in Pakistan to eschew violence and settle their differences within the confines of law. “Our concern is that, you know, this dialogue takes place within the confines of their law and constitution,” State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said in response to a question about violence among lawyers’ groups in Karachi. “We would, of course, urge everybody to turn away from use of violence to settle differences,” he added in his answer at the daily briefing. The spokesman initially tried to parry the question, saying: “This is part of their democratic process,” but then called for an end to violence when pressed by the questioner.
