1% increase in GST led to 15% surge in rates: Chief Justice

Supreme Court Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on today observed that increase in sales tax had led to rise in the rates of food products.

He said this while heading a three-judge bench seized with the hearing of a case relating to increase in general sales tax and oil rates.

The chief justice said that 1 % increase in the GST caused 15 % surge in the rates. He asked as to who’d resort to the parliament if the rulers kept imposing taxes on their own.
