Govt decides competitive bidding for power generation from Thar coal
The government has decided competitive bidding instead of extending tariff for companies for generation of electricity from vast deposit of coal in Thar.
According to energy resources, this has been decided in a meeting of the Planning Commission and the Ministry for Water and Electricity here Saturday and a formal announcement will soon be made. The meeting was presided over by the caretaker prime minister.
Earlier, the NEPRA had announced a tariff of 7-8 cents per unit but a private group interested in generating electricity of 1,000 mw had demanded a tariff of 11 cents per unit.
However, it has now been decided again in a high-level meeting for competitive bidding.
The project of electricity generation from coal resource in Sindh has been delaying for the last six years and a Chinese group, Shin Hua withdrew from this project two years ago.
