Elections: 9000 candidates to contest for 1070 seats The Election Commission has issued final lists of candidates for national and provincial assemblies seats. The printing of ballot papers will be started from tomorrow (Monday). The last phase of the electoral process will be completed with polling on January 8, 2008.

The list has been issued after expiry of the deadline for the withdrawal of nomination papers.

Total 13490 candidates had filed nomination papers in the country from Nov. 21-26 for national and provincial assemblies seats. During scrutiny of nomination papers from Nov. 27 to Dec. 03 and 12443 candidates papers were passed, while the nominations of 916 candidates including Muslim League (N) leaders Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif were rejected.

The nomination papers of 665 candidates for reserved seats of women and minorities were passed. Appeals against rejection or approval of nominations were filed on Dec. 7, which were decided till Dec. 14.

The final lists of the candidates were released after withdrawal of papers on Dec. 15. According to the lists about 9000 candidates would contest elections for 1070 national and provincial assemblies seats.
